ATLAS HANDMADE CUSTOM GUITARS
ELEGANT MODEL SOLID BODY
REVIEW Having recently been delighted with the hollow bodied Ultimate model , see our earlier review, we were eager to get our hands on a solid body creation to see if the same level of skill that had been applied to the complex structure of a hollow body were matched by the entirely different techniques needed to produce a solid bodied instrument, especially as Atlas guitars as a company were better known for their earlier violins etc. At first glance the quality and attention to detail were obvious as once again they have produced a beautiful guitar. The finish was as good as the later day Gibsons, which although not as good as those produced in their heyday are still of a high standard, and almost as good as the PRS which when you consider that this Elegant model at £895 is around half the price of the custom 22/24 etc, is certainly impressive. The Elegant model is very similar in shape to the Les Paul
but don’t put this guitar in the same category as the many other manufacturers
that simply try, and fail, to produce a Gibson copy. This guitar tends to feel
and look like a Les Paul purely because it is a design that works rather than
trying to blatantly replicate the famous factory, it is a hand-built guitar in
its own right and feels that way.
Spec is as follows ;
Grade 4a flame maple top. ( more often a grade 5 )
Mahogany back and set neck.
Zebra XS1 and XS2 hand wound humbucker pickups.
Coil Taps.
Ebony fingerboard with Atlas designed mother of pearl Eagle inlay markers.
Gold Gotoh tuners with ebony buttons.
Gold trem bridge.
Masked maple binding.
Plush and well fitting Hardcase.
Unlike the hollow body Ultimate model this one played well straight from the
case. We did lower the action and varied the pick-up angle to find the sweet
spot but for fine tuning only and these are personal adjustments that you can
expect to carry out whatever guitar you buy. The neck is comfortable although we
prefer the thinner wider shape of some PRS models and the frets were standard
gauge, lighter than Jumbo, which made playing easy. The pick-ups are not as good
as Gibson Humbuckers or the PRS Zebras, or McCarty’s for that matter, but you
have to remember that just being compared to these guitars is a compliment
especially when you consider the price tag. The tuners work well and the trem
system was reasonable with no real tuning issues even when deep bends were
played.
So all in all how does this Elegant model rate ? We’d say around a very
respectable 8/10 in terms of playability and finish. As for our rating on value
for money we would have to go up a notch and say an impressive 9/10. It isn’t as
good as a higher end Gibson but certainly leaves the Studio model for dead
together with the various Epiphone and PRS Santana CE models, even at their
best. Neither does the Elegant match up to a Fender Custom shop, a PRS
anniversary or some other guitars in the £1100 to ‘£1600 price range . . . but
at just under £900 this Atlas guitar is very well priced and worth every penny.
If your price range is under a grand you needn’t look anywhere else as it’s a
great guitar for the money. SM The sole UK distributors are Paul and Gaynor Cummings, nice genuine people who actually care about who buys the guitars and who go out of their way to match the right instrument to the buyers requirements. When you add all this up and consider the range of options on offer to personalise your guitar, it becomes a very appealing package. In short if you are in the market for a top end branded guitar that costs in excess of £1500+ think very seriously about a guitar from Atlas of Thailand. This Elegant range cost just under £900 !!! And that's really an excellent buy. Get on the phone to Paul or send an email and get the ball rolling, you won’t regret it Manufacturer : Atlas Handmade Custom Guitars.
